Inuit Tattoo Revitalization

Project

During the times of Residential Schools and Missionaries being introduced to the Inuit, the art of traditional tattooing was forbidden leaving this beautiful part of our culture to almost disappear.

Through this amazing project Inuit women are reclaiming this and are refusing to let this part of our culture die.

This project has visited Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay, and Rankin Inlet in Nunavuat and Ulukhakvik, N.W.T with the project.

2017 the book, "Reawakening Our Ancestor's Lines" was published highlighting the projects time in Kugluktuk, NU.

The vision for the Inuit Tattoo Revitalization Project came from my dear friend, Hovak Johnston.

Hovak has taken it upon herself to personally learn all the methods of tattooing (poke and stick, stitching and tattoo machine) to be sure that the practice of tattooing is not close to being lost again in our culture.
